Thank you to our five recent candidates for the Board of Directors. David Lee and Rebecca Guralnick, incumbent members, were each reelected to new three-year terms. Newcomer Stephanie Dernek was elected to a three-year term, while newcomer Richard Diaz was elected to a two-year term. Again, thanks to those owners who ran and to those owners who voted.

Congratulations and thank you, Outpost community - shoppers and owners! Since 1999, the Outpost community has participated in our Buy A Bag fundraising program to help combat hunger in Milwaukee. From November 1st to December 31, every round up and donation went towards the purchase of natural and organic food, including fresh produce, enough to fill a grocery bag to feed a family in need.

My name is Cassandra Papesh and I was elected to the board in May of this year. I began my Outpost journey back in 2014. Through Outpost I learned about sustainability, environmentally conscientious practices, healthy eating and even what organic really means. I became an employee, an owner and a board member all for the same reason: our mission and cooperative values.

I joined the Outpost Board for the love of food, but I stayed on the board because I enjoy working toward a better Milwaukee. I have always had an interest in food knowledge: What is the food source? How is it used by this group of people? What kinds of dishes can be made from it? This was hugely interesting to me, and still is. Now that I have been on the board for a few years, I see that my food interest is only one small bit of knowledge that I bring to the board, but the real board work is about building a better Milwaukee community.

When I ran for the board in 2018, I was motivated by my experiences working with children and families in Milwaukee that have been exposed to complex trauma, often involving systemic racism and historical trauma. I knew that food and mealtimes are a platform for building relationships and connection with others, especially within the home, and connections to other people is how resiliency is built and communities can heal. I also knew that Outpost is a leader in providing access to healing food and connections to people that care about Milwaukee.
