At a time when headlines about foodborne illness can make something as simple as feeding our families feel a little less certain, I’ve found that one of the ways I stay grounded is by knowing where my food comes from and who is behind it.

For me, that means shopping at my local Outpost Co-op Grocery Store. 

I trust Outpost not only because of the products on its shelves, but because of the care and thoughtfulness behind how those products get there. There is a vetting process. There are standards. And there is a commitment to working with local farmers (such as Hundred Acre and Olden Organics), producers and food providers who are part of our community.

That connection matters. When I shop at Outpost, I feel like I’m making a choice based on more than convenience or price. I’m supporting people who care about the food they grow, make, and provide, and a cooperative that takes seriously its responsibility to its owners and the broader community.

Of course, no food system can eliminate every risk. But in uncertain times, I find comfort in making informed choices and supporting organizations whose values I trust.

Sometimes staying grounded starts with something as simple as knowing where you shop and knowing why you trust it.
