There is a nationwide outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause intestinal illness. Federal health officials (FDA and CDC) are investigating the source. One identified source is shredded bagged iceberg lettuce. The investigation is ongoing. We will continue to monitor the situation.
QUICK FACTS
- Outpost does NOT carry the shredded iceberg lettuce identified by the FDA
- Outpost carries Earthbound Farm salad mixes (owned by Taylor Farms), but no Taylor Farms branded salads or kits have been linked to this outbreak
- While not indicated in this outbreak, organic produce, like any fresh produce, can potentially be exposed to pathogens; organic is not automatically risk-free
- Organic and local produce is a great choice when available, however, always follow safe food handling practices when handling any fresh products
Kitchen Safety Protocol
At home, it is always good practice to use food safety precautions when preparing fresh foods. The FDC and CDC recommend the following food handling protocol:
- Wash fresh produce under running water
- Rinse fresh herbs well
- Wash hands before and after preparing produce
- Clean cutting boards and utensils
- Cook vegetables when appropriate
