From our Fall 2011 issue of Graze magazine. One of Outpost's most popular prepared foods! The base for our veggie version of this popular sandwich is textured vegetable protein - TVP for short. It's made from soybeans and looks, tastes and acts much like ground meat without the saturtated fat or cholesterol. Look for it in our bulk food section -  you can buy just what you need. Even meat-lovers will gobble this sandwich up. Perfect for a crowd, this recipe is easy to double.

Ingredients

2 cups textured vegetable protein (TVP)          

1-1/2 cups water                                             

1 cup red onion, chopped

1 cup green pepper, chopped

2 tablespoons olive oil

32 ounces tomato sauce

8 ounces tomato paste

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1 tablespoon basil

2 teaspoons chili powder

1 tablespoon oregano

1 teaspoon garlic, minced

1 tablespoon molasses

Directions

  1. Put TVP and water in container, set aside. (it only takes a few minutes to reconstitute)
  2. In large pot over medium heat, sauté onion and green pepper in olive oil.
  3. Add tomato paste, tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper, spices and molasses in bowl and set aside.
  4. Add TVP to sauce, bring to a boil and simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes. 

Per serving: 88 Calories, 3g fat, 14g protein,; 11g carbohydrates,  398mg sodium, 4g fiber
