John Ela is the master grower at Ela Orchard, an ancestral orchard in Rochester, Wis. John is a fifth generation Wisconsinite and an intern on the orchard living in the house his great great grandfather built in 1844. He grows the apples at the orchard, and then picks and presses them before they’re made into delicious hard cider
Making Ela Cider is a family operation, and John’s mom, Sue and sister, Julia are involved in every step of the business.
The pressed apples from the orchard are sent to a partner in Madison where they’re made into cider. Then the whole Ela family pasteurizes, bottles, labels, packages and distributes it.
“So it really is a business that we are involved with every step of the way,” Sue said.
By making Ela cider, John and his family are helping to preserve a family legacy. “It is exciting to achieve our goals of making a high quality cider and supporting the legacy of the Ela Orchard,” Sue said.
