When they bought their Sun Prairie farm 15 years ago, the first thing Kay Jensen and Paul Ehrhardt did was plant a small garden. They wanted to see if things would grow.

The next year they planted a little more for market. The year after that they tried a CSA, growing produce for a small group of six friends. Now in their 13th season of farming, Jensen and Ehrhardt are getting the hang of things and looking toward the future of JenEhr Family Farm.

They’re also realizing the challenges and joys that come with growing produce in Wisconsin. Weather, labor, health and market whims change quickly and can be dramatic. 

It is an up and down life with the reality that during any season at least one major item that we grow will fail, Jensen said. But life on the farm is not without its rewards.

“I like that we feed people good food, that we take good care of the land and that we provide a good honest work and living to those who work with us.”
