Produce to the People
Produce to the People
IMPORTANT: Produce to the People will end effective November 30, 2023
The United States Department of Agriculture Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) has denied the grant application from Hunger Task Force to renew funding that was used for Produce to the People. As a result, the program will end effective November 30, 2023.
Produce to the People is a partnership between Outpost and Hunger Task Force to provide SNAP (FoodShare) recipients a 50% discount on fresh produce purchased at Outpost. GusNIP funding was applied to offset the loss to Outpost. Hunger Task Force reapplied for a GusNIP grant from the USDA to renew funding used for the program and the application was turned down. This was unexpected as the program proved to be very successful in helping SNAP participants purchase more fruits and vegetables! Much of that produce came from local and regional farmers as well.
Since the program's inception in April of 2022, FoodShare participants have saved more the $435,000 on fresh, wholesome produce purchased at Outpost's four store locations. These savings were funded by the grant.
All of us at Outpost are deeply disappointed that the national program leaders who oversee the grant application process for GusNIP failed to recognize the popularity of the program and the benefit it has provided to the community overall.
