If you like supporting locally-owned businesses, it doesn’t get much more local than Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. Owner Matt McClutchy lives on the same block in Bay View where he runs his café and coffee roasting company.

Matt has been roasting coffee ever since 1999 when he purchased Brewed Awakenings on Brady Street from some friends he’d worked with at the Oriental Theater. He purchased a small coffee roaster and set it up in the back room and started roasting for the café.

The business grew from there. It also moved to 2920 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. Matt runs the business and employs 14. It’s still work and Matt says there are many other things he’d like to have more time for, besides work, but he loves producing a high quality product and watching people enjoy it.

He also needs a great cup of coffee every morning, so that helps to motivate him.

“We are only interested in roasting the very best of the best coffees from around the world and to compliment that we are obsessed with freshness,” Matt said. “We roast coffee only when we have an order and deliver it the next day — fresh, fresh, fresh." 

Matt and his crew roast between 12 and 20 different coffees from the world’s finest coffee-growing regions. As for the future, Matt plans to keep roasting great coffee and see where it leads, maybe another retail café, maybe not. He hasn’t made up his mind yet.
