It started with a six-inch pita. Back in 1979, brothers John and George Kashou started a small, retail bakery right here in Milwaukee. They’d grown up eating pita bread and wanted to create a better product than what was available at the time.

That small, retail bakery has grown into a business that now employs more than a hundred people and is working to become the leading brand of pita bread. But that’s not all the company makes.

Through the years, John and George, founders and owners of Kangaroo Brands, have continued to develop new products, like flatbreads, pita chips and a pita sandwich. If there’s any downside to success, it’s trying to stay one step ahead of consumers and what they want — premium foods at affordable prices.

“Kangaroo is one of the few remaining family businesses in a food world dominated by giant companies,” said George Kashou, the company’s vice president. “We like it that way because we can make decisions that reflect our commitment to producing the highest quality and most innovative products in the pita category and beyond."
