Why do you want to be on the Outpost Natural Foods Board of Directors?
I think it's amazing how Outpost as an organization shows its love for the community by supporting local farmers. It feels great to be part of something so beautiful. I know that each time I go shopping at Outpost, I will be learning something new, be it about Milwaukee, Wisconsin or the United States at large. Yet it feels very homey. That is exciting! Not to mention the people, the smiles and conversations truly make my day :-)
What professional skills do you bring to a Board position of a $50 million business?
My educational training includes a BS in economics and an MBA with emphasis in accounting. I have worked as an actuarial analyst at an insurance company for two years. Thanks to my educational and professional training, I continue to apply those skills towards budgeting for my family, managing our finances and planning for our future.
Describe your prior involvement with community organizations and/or cooperatives.
I served in various roles when I volunteered for a local nonprofit organization for seven years, in food service training, assisting with energy assistance applications, microlending to small businesses and sustainability. I am a Pearl for Teen Coach, a member and assistant coach of Ex Fabula story telling nonprofit. I volunteered to teach 4th grade catechism at the local church this year and help out at my children's school's lunch and recess time.
Describe areas in which you are culturally fluent with a diverse community.
I was born in Benin to Nigerian parents and moved to America when I was 17. I speak French, Igbo, Hindi and English. Hindi? Why? How? I get that a lot. I learned Hindi from watching Bollywood movies. My mom was a big fan. I learned how to speak French as a child in kindergarten and was able to retain it even after I transitioned to an English-speaking primary school because Cotonou, Benin, where I lived, is a French speaking country. I love the beauty of different cultures, people, language, music, food, fashion, you name it. What is most fascinating to me about our differences is how similar we are, despite our differences.
